The Spun Stool was created by Thomas Heatherwick for the manufacturer Magis.

Operating in Northern Italy, this company is known for its boldly experimental approach to interior décor. Based in London, Thomas Heatherwick is one of the UK’s foremost designers. He has been responsible for a number of extremely high-profile projects, including London’s Routemaster bus and the Olympic Cauldron, which featured prominently in the closing ceremony of the 2012 games. In 2013, he was awarded a CBE.

Made from durable polyethylene, the Spun Stool shows the designer’s vivid imagination at work on a smaller scale. Looking like an oversized spindle from a fairy tale, it sits tipped over on one side, with a hollow in the top which serves as a seat. Measuring 65cm in height and 91cm in diameter, it’s large enough to accommodate children and adults alike, and the way it rocks from side to side brings an extra sense of fun. A single Spun Stool makes an entertaining addition to children’s bedrooms and domestic gardens, but it can also be used in multiples to create a striking focal point for parks and playgrounds.
